Genesis 9:3-7 says, “Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs. “But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. “Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man. “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man. And as for you, be fruitful and multiply; Bring forth abundantly in the earth And multiply in it.”
In these verses God sets forth to man the order of things as they are to take place on earth. God notes that He has given every moving thing to man for food just as He has given them plants and herbs. The only exception is that they were not to eat animals with life in them. The blood was to be drained…just as we do today when we kill an animal before we eat it.
Then God discusses the life of man. Man is different than animals. God says that He will demand a reckoning from the hand of every beast that sheds the blood of man. If an animal kills a human their life will be required at the hand of man. Even in our world we still hold this principle fairly consistent. If a bear kills a human in Yellowstone that bear is hunted down and killed to ensure that it will not kill again.
Yet God also gives commands concerning man taking the life of others. There will also be a reckoning for every man that murders another. The one who sheds blood, by man shall his blood be shed. This is a principle that God has set forth to protect the sacred nature of human life. When a person does not regard the sanctity of human life and takes the life of another then that person is to be put to death so that they will not kill again.
The reason for this principle is then discussed. Man’s life is sacred because man is created in the image of God. We are different than animals. Animals are given to man for food…yet man is made in the image of God and as such is not to be killed.
Why is it that our society has lost regard for the sacred nature of human life? Why is it that many in society have no problem taking the life of another? Why is it that even young children are willing to kill on a whim? Why is it that the lives of unborn babies are destroyed by the thousands in our country and most don’t even bat an eye? Life has lost its value to our society because our society has quit believing in God. When I believe that man is made in the image of God, then I understand the value of human life. Yet when I quit believing in God, then I also lose all reason to respect human life. If we want our society to respect life again, the lives of cops, the lives of blacks, the lives of babies, the lives of others, then we must turn our society back to God.
